Omega 6 9
Omega 6 / 9 refers to two members of the family of unsaturated fatty acids that we need for healthy living.
However, Omega 6 is an essential fatty acid, meaning that we have to take it in our diet, because our bodies cannot
make enough of it for our needs. Omega 9 on the other hand can be made by our bodies in sufficient quantities.
Omega 6 / 9 fatty acids are to be found in animal fats and vegetable oils.
Omega 6 9
Omega 6 fatty acid is to be found in most vegetable cooking oil. A high consumption of Omega 6 may increase the
likelihood of breast cancer and prostate cancer. It is also associated with strokes, arthritis, osteoporosis,
inflammation and depression. In fact, many of the medications for the above illnesses work by blocking the effects
of Omega 6.
Omega 9 can be made by the body in sufficient quantities from animal fat and vegetable oil, so is not considered
essential. Omega 9 is abundant in olive oil, avocados and nuts.
The Omega 6 9 fatty acids are both necessary for a healthy life, but care should be taken to restrict the amount
of Omega 6 consumed.
Pure Omega 3
Pure Omega 3 is most readily obtained from fish oil and oily fish best of all. Other good sources of pure Omega
3 are grass-fed animal fat the most readily available of which is beef. The real trick is to eat the correct
balance of Omega 6 and Omega 3. The traditional ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 used to be between 4:1 and 1:2, but
dietary changes in the modern Western population have swung the ratio way out of proportion to 17:1 and even 30:1
suggesting a dire need for more pure Omega 3 in the Western diet.
Omega 3 Arthritis
Omega 3 arthritis refers to a condition that can come about if someone ingests far too much more Omega 6 fatty
acid that Omega 3 fatty acid. One of the functions of Omega 3 is that it is non-inflammatory, whereas Omega6 is
inflammatory. However, since the body can hold only so much of these fatty acids, eating too much Omega 6 will
displace the Omega 3 possibly resulting in Omega 3 arthritis.
Super Omega 3
Omega 3 is often referred to as super Omega 3 because of the fantastic health benefits that it provides. Super
Omega 3 fatty acids are part of a family of essential unsaturated oils. They are called 'essential' because we have
to ingest them, because our bodies cannot make them in sufficient quantities. Super Omega 3 fatty acids are most
prevalent in fish and especially in oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel.
Omega 6 And Omega 3
Omega 6 and Omega 3 are both essential to our health, but they are opposites of one another in a way. Omega 6 is
inflammatory, whereas Omega 3 is anti-inflammatory. The trouble stems from the fact that the body can only hold so
much Omega 6 and Omega 3 at a time. Therefore, if you eat too much Omega 6 there will be less room for Omega 3. It
is very important to learn how to get the balance between Omega 6 and Omega 3 right.
